We are delighted that you and your child are looking to join our school community. Please make sure that you contact the school office as soon as possible to let us know that you are wanting to join us. When you phone school, we will arrange a time for you to come to meet our Head Teacher for a tour of school and some time for you to get the relevant documentation from the school office. In the mean time, please have a look at our Welcome to School booklet for Nursery, Reception and Year One and Two, which will give you some helpful information about the day to day workings of our school.
Starting Nursery
All 3-year-old children are entitled to 15 hours free nursery education and some families, subject to eligibility criteria, are able to access an additional 15 hours through Extended Entitlement funding. Our Nursery is able to offer full day places as well as part day sessions. The sessions offered are mornings, lunchtimes or afternoons. You can choose a combination of days and a combination of sessions. Equally, you are welcome to choose all day every day. Please contact the school office for more information.
It is important that parents register their child’s name at school for a nursery and/or school place – the earlier the better from our point of view. The table below details when you could expect your child to start nursery or school.
We work hard in conjunction with parents to try to offer flexible places to best meet the needs of children and families. If places are oversubscribed, our nursery children are offered a place in date of birth order. Those children who do not get a place go on our waiting list; they usually continue to attend another provider until a place becomes available or until they start school in our reception class the following September. We work closely with Pickering Preschool, a separate private provider who are located on our school site, to offer combined places where this is needed.
Occasionally, a place becomes available mid-year, if a family move away for example, we then offer the place to the oldest child on our waiting list. Each year the cut-off point is different depending on how many children there are wanting a nursery place.
For the children who do not attend our nursery but who will join us in Reception, we invite them to join our nursery children in several story sessions during the summer term to help them get to know their future classmates and staff.
Our catchment area for nursery is the town of Pickering and the minor parishes of Stape, Newton-upon-Rawcliffe, Middleton, Aislaby, Wrelton, Kirby Misperton, Lockton, Levisham, Cropton and Low Marishes. Parents of children who live outside our catchment area may apply for one of our nursery places, however, priority would be given to those children who live within the catchment area.
Our admissions policy can be found on the Policies Page and more information about Nursery can be found on our Nursery Page.
Please complete our ‘Pre-admission form 2025‘ and return to the School Office.

Starting School if your child is already in our Nursery
During the autumn term that your child is in Nursery we will send home a letter from Harrogate Education Office asking parents to register on-line for their preferred school. Help with the online registering is available from school should parents need it.
Starting School if your child is not already in our Nursery
The earlier you register with school the better, from our point of view. Please call into school to complete the form or download it from the link below.
Parents need to:-
- complete a school pre-admission form at any time once your child is born
- register your child’s details online with Harrogate Education Office in the academic year before they are due to start.
If you have registered your child at school we will make sure you receive a letter from Harrogate Education Office in the autumn term before your child is due to start school which reminds you to register on-line.
Transferring from Another School
If you haven’t already, you will need to let the school office know and you should also contact the admissions office of North Yorkshire County Council, Harrogate on 01609 533679 or schooladmissions@northyorks.gov.uk. We encourage parents to telephone us to arrange a visit to our school for your child wherever possible. We can then also talk you through what paperwork you need to complete but, more importantly, ensure that your child’s transition goes smoothly.
Please complete our Pre-admission form 2023 and return to the school office.
Our admissions policy, including details of our catchment area, can be found on the Policies Page.
